The danger with water freezing is not in the lines. but in the assorted connectors at the ends of the lines
Couplers, ELbows and PEX to Thread adapters are all hard plastic,,When it freezes it cracks and bad things happen.. Same for valves and other hard or metal parts.
PEX (The lines) are much more tolerant of freezing.
What's more..If the line is less than HALF FULL, even hard stuff has no problem. The water, as it freezes, can expand into the other half,,, and will.
