Pintle hitch

I have to tow a rental trailer which has just an open ring on the tongue... the tow hitch I have to use is called a pintle hitch where the open ring goes over the ball more or less... While I see how this works- what prevents the ring from moving around the hitch ball? It tows the trailer fine but is clanky and loud- anything I can do to make it quieter?

    I recall a situation where someone used a piece of radiator hose over the ball to quiet the system from banging. Don't know how it was secured, maybe just slipped over the ball.

    ah that helps- The "load" on the trailer is sitting directly above the trailer wheels- maybe I can push it up closer to the bumper of the truck- I'm sure it will tow differenly......
