Pintle Ring Hitch

I am renting a.24 foot car hauler. It comes.with a ring Pintle hitch. I will also have to rent the Pintle receiver as well. Curious why some trailers come with this kind of hitch?

I do have a 3/4 ton Ford with 7.3 and currently pull a 12k bumper pull toy hauler. I had my OEM hitch replaced with a 16k hitch... The trailer with the Pintle will not have any WDH or Anti Sway. It does have brakes and will work off my controller... Just never towed with this kind of hitch before..

Your truck empty weight should be around 6,500 - 7,000 pounds while the GVWR is 8,800 or so (posted on your drivers door). This is a limited cargo rating, but your trailer should not have more than 1,000 pounds on the hitch, probably less than 800. You should not have any problems towing the load.

Pintle hitches on a dump truck to tow a trailer with a backhoe on it are rated at more than 4,000 pounds hitch weight and 30,000 + pounds trailer weight. Many rental companies keep such trailers around for moving commercial loads.

  • I use a pintle hitch for flat towing large vehicles. Primarily my friends shuttle bus. Pintle hitches can't overload the latch, so they are superior for loads with low tongue weight which would normally put all the load into the ball latch during hard braking.

I hard mounted my commercial pintle. The receiver-mount pintle hitches often don't have enough capacity for the larger vehicles that require them.

Also note that most trailers with a lunette ring use the SAE commercial round pin connector. The outputs are not the same as an RV-way connector. For one there is not trailer brake circuit (only battery+ for ABS and interior lights and turn and stop circuits are separate. I hard wired in a SAE round pin connector for this reason. Making a adapter won't give you full functions on the trailer but you can get close.
  • Some trailers come with a pintle ring because they are too. heavy to haul with the strongest standard ball and socket.

For some lighter bumper pulls offered as rentals, the equipment may come with a pintle ring because the market is one that usually hauls heavier equipment. But in the case of the car hauler, it is probably just too big for a class V ball. That means either gooseneck, or pintle, and pintle keeps going beyond the limits for gooseneck hitches and balls.
  • Need one of these.
    Pintle hook.

I thnk the reason some trailers come with them is that they carry a lot more weight than the average recreational vehicle will weigh. Most light duty trucks do not have the hitch carrying capicity to use one of these type hitches to it's rated capacity.

I think you will find them mostly on commercial flatbed type trailers, or trailers used to carry gravel or sand. I have never seen one on a recreational trailer.
In addition, most rental places my use that type of hitch becuase they rent large trucks that may be used to tow heavy vehicles like tractors, backhoes etc. and those trucks almost always have pintle hitches.

  • If you will be frequently using a pintle hitch, you can buy one here.

Normally pintle hitch is only used in commercial equipment, and usually has more than 800 pounds of hitch weight. Rated up to 30,000 pounds GTWR and well over 4,000 pounds of hitch weight, the Pintle hitch is very strong.

I hope the truck you are towing with is strong enough. Will the trailer have electric trailer brakes? Or surge brakes?
