I never understood why older folks dedicate their retirement to looking after their adult children's families.
They dedicated their adult lives to raising their families and working but refuse to do things they want later on.
Aren't you entitled to having a life for yourself?
BTW--I'm a geezer with no kids.
Cuz that's what parents do. Just is. My Dad died with a handful of money. Didn't help him in the grave. I convinced my Mom to spend it living her life. I don't need or want an inheritance. I want memories of a happy Mom. Already got the memories of a great childhood.
Lizzy, I get what you're saying. We have a huge family and we group all our birthdays into seasonal parties. Fall b-days, winter b-days, etc. Even then, it's hard to plan stuff without it interfering with a "saved" date.
My advice is to not worry about it too much. Plan your trips as far in advance as you can and tell people you're gone those dates.
