That big black knob beside the male quick connect is the knob to control flame height. I only removed the propane regulator, not the temperature control.
This is the kit I used. Expensive, but works well and the hose is not permanently attached to the grill. You can do the same thing by buying a propane male quick connect, a 1/4" to 1/8" adaptor and a hose.
