I got to do an similar clean-up that I will not go into as the circumstance was largely different.
If the heating vent is in the floor then it must run under the unit.
There is a very good chance that you will not be able to clean the duct with it in place.
Is the duct exposed underneath?
If it is, taking it down and cleaning or replacing won't be too tough.
Even if it is not exposed, the belly skin is usually not that difficult to remove.
If it is rigid pipe, it will not be difficult to remove and clean. It will probably have leaked butter into the underbelly insulation and onto the skin as well.
If it is flexible duct, the butter has probably soaked into the insulation, fortunately such ducting is not real expensive.
Whatever, you are in for a good time....(Not)
As you have to take things apart, keep asking yourself how it was put together. They had to build it somehow, and that is how you should take it apart.
