Since you have discovered the damage to the power cord there is more to do. Go thru the whole thing and check all 12 volt wiring as mice will attack that as well as the higher voltage stuff. Due to the amperage available to a 12 volt system there is nothing worse than a 12 volt fed fire. Ask a boat owner. Also check all of your furnace and cooling ducting. Mice will strip the covering leaving just the coiled wire. Check in confined spaces like under the shower/tub pan for nests. All that insulation they have snagged is somewhere beefing up a nest. Check for mouse droppings in all the cupboards and confined areas. That must be removed. Use a face mask. This kind of thing could be carrying The Hanta Virus. Keep people and pets out until a thorough cleaning and inspection has been made. It is very possible that your chewed cord is the tip of the iceberg. Also check for water leaks. Mice will chew the plastic piping.
