Premium gas

Evening all,

Not looking to start a debate about premium vs regular gas.

While at the gas station today, I noticed the cost of premium gas was about 75cents more than regular. Seems the last time I paid any attention to the price of premium it was something like 20 or 30 cents more than regular.

75 cents seems a little ridiculous to me.

What gives?
  • I burn regular most of the time in both PU trucks

I use non-ethanol in all my small engines, GEN, Lawn mower, chain saws etc. cost more but it burns cleaner and I have no problem with any of my small engines.
  • From what a friend in the petroleum distributing business tells me, everyone (stations, distributors and suppliers) want to stop selling midgrade and premium and recover that infrastructure for more regular and diesel capacity. They can't just discontinue it outright, so they're working to price it out of demand.

They seem well on schedule in my area. 60-70 cents difference between 87 and 93 octane fuel.
  • things are still happening oil dropped $3 bucks a barrel and the gas price in my area jumped .25 cents , recreational gas is $3.65 thats the stuff with no alochol in it.
  • Yes it use to be a 10-20 cent rise across the octanes. Now it's as ridiculous as how much the prices fluctuate when nothing is happening.
  • Around here it's about 50 cents more.

I use Premium in my Explorer EcoBoost because that's what the factory recommends, and, well, gas prices are OK right now so it doesn't hurt that bad :) Now, if they get up to $5 again I might think differently.
  • People are willing to pay it. Just like in my neighbor hood within 3 blocks the price of unleaded regular varies from 2.34 to 2.15 lots of people filling up at the 2.34 station
  • I think it may depend on the station. I normally use regular in my Ecoboost but when towing I use premium. Recently traveled to the NC mountains and I saw a wide range. Most were 30-35 more but some were 50-60 cents higher. None as high as 75 but it doesn't surprise me. Supply and demand. Just checked gas buddy and it is about 50cents locally.
  • I did a quick check on Gas Buddy and the difference in my neighborhood is 50 cents.
