My corrected statement above.
Blow the traps a JaxDad mentioned and add a cup to each trap. For the toilet simply push the foot pedal down and have the sprayer open while someone gives it a blast of air. THEN add veggie oil to seal the toilet bowl.
Pretty darn simple! - JaxDadExplorer III

So you agree. Your asking "why use anything?" ignores the fact that you should use something. Not sure why you said "depends?" Depends on what? Whether you want the RV to stink the next year because the traps are open all winter?mike-s wrote:

You really do want to pour something in the drain traps and toilet bowl.
WHY use anything??? Simply blow out your system.
Depends, some vegetable oil in the drain after closing it out keeps the odors at bay. Also a small amount to seal the toilet bowl.
Oh, and oil floats on water so unless you blow out the traps (uck) it really won't displace most of what's in the trap and you're still in danger of freezing. Simpler to just pour in a cup of antifreeze.
Why “uck”?
I’ve been doing it for years. Take a damp rag, wrap it around the tip of a standard blow gun, stuff it in the drain opening and give a short blast of air. If it’s a dual sink just put the plug in the second opening. - suprzExplorerWell, i believe i found a solution. A friend of mine has a boat, and he advised to go to West Marine. I just checked and they have virgin, propylene glycol for fresh water systems. I will just pick some up there if i can't find prestone

I'd be more concerned about water freezing in the trap than some odors.
I did forget the traps ONCE! Used antifreeze next time. But veggie oil will work just fine. - mike-sExplorer

I have used 3 methods of Winterizing
Pink stuff.. Once, never again.. I will never put it in the fresh water system again. PERIOD.
Dry Method. Whey Hey Blow The Lines out.. like 10 times. Opened all valves including low point and hooked up the air compressor. (6gallon pancake 150 PSI via a regulator set to 50 PSI dont' want to blow the lines UP. just blow them OUT) when it ran out of air I shut off the flow and let it recharge, when the compressor stopped did it again. like 5-10 times.. then add PINK to traps and toilets only Dump waste tanks and add a bit more PINK to keep the seals moist and call it a winter.
Today the S Method. I shortcut but
Long method : Attach snow blower to front of RV.. Turn so compass points to "S" drive.. When you stop for fuel someone pushes back their cap scratches their head and asks "What the @@#$ is that?" you are winterized.
Short metod.. Skip the snow blower drive past a HOME DEPOT and see if they are selling them (or Lowes or _____) or look for the absence of "Bridge freezes before highway" signs.. Though I don't go THAT far south
Just get one of the new-fangled snow shovels with the funny bent "ergonomic" handle. They are lighter, cheaper, and will accomplish the same thing.
I wish I could do that...
KJ7POE - WA4HTZExplorerHi 'yxm. I'd heard of the long method but not the short one. I like it! I'll have to got to the local HD (less than a mile from the house) in December and see if they have them. Hey, maybe I'm already winterized!

I'm digging this method! Got a few more years before I can try it. - wa8yxmExplorer IIII have used 3 methods of Winterizing
