Profiling your Salesman

How many of you have got sacked with a salesman you can't stand? Do you walk, or try some other tactic?

Usually we get stuck with the first one that hits the door, but I think I'm really going to start profiling and be obvious about it. I have been plagued lately with those I don't understand, those that have smokers breath or half their teeth, and the other day one with a huge belly that swung out in the open under his shirt tails under his coat when he walked. I mean skin! I'm not trying to be a jerk (maybe I am just a jerk), but it really distracts from what should be a reasonably high level experience and transaction.

It's bad when there is a Dealership, brand, or coach you want but you turn away because you didn't win the salesman lottery. :(
  • I don't care what they look like, smell like, how they dress. Having been profiled for years, I understand that appearance means nothing. To choose a sales rep, I ask a question in which I know the answer. If they lie or try to bulls#$t me, I find another sales rep. Pretty simple really. And I have no problem walking away from bull. Some of the nicest, best-dressed sales reps were the same ones that that had no problem lying. They were also the ones that got loud and indignant when I refused to work with them.
  • You'll end up closing the deal with a sales manager so you might as well start there. Or if you're not happy with a salesperson ask for the manager.

    We had a salesperson with a heavy accent. He kept saying the name of the model and I couldn't find it in the manufacturer's brochure. I finally realized his W was actually a V and his "SA" was a Z so then I was able to find the correct model. I thought he was saying Windsor....no such model.
  • Tell them you're just looking. When you have questions, go to another salesman.
    You are under no obligation to buy from or deal with the first sales person who speaks to you.
  • I normally walk in and directly ask for the manager.. When asked why , I simply tell them that the manager , or owner will be the only folks that can OK selling a vehicle at the cost I want , so lets cut out the dribble...Usually managers are not showing skin (none that I saw) .. and have all their teeth.. Although , even if they had no teeth , and could whistle me a low number , I'm all in..
    Mainly because I have learned that the kettle is usually black...

    Personally, I have no loyalty to any particular dealer so, right now, the local dealers are just showrooms to me. I'm honest in that I tell them that I'm not buying right now, just comparing different models that I have interest in and, if I have any questions, I'll come find them to ask. When I'm ready to buy, I'll likely simply fax my personal "build sheet" to the sales managers of a bunch of dealers and see what they do on a price when I'm ready to buy. Frankly, almost any dealer I walk in to, I feel I'm more educated than the sales people anyway. Most of the time, they don't even know the specs and options on any particular model...
