Propane powered AC?

Since the fridge can run off propane; why can't a roof mount AC be ran off propane?

  • I think it is a packaging problem. Can't really be flat, and work efficiently.

Gas fired absorption refrigeration is still widely used on large buildings and ice-making plants where natural gas is available, but usually if the choice is between LPG fired absorption, and electrically powered compressor units, the electricity is cheaper.

For environmental A/C, you need something a lot larger than what slowly cools a 4-12 cu ft refrigerator, so it is a lot of refrigeration stack, and since it must be vertical, it can't sit on the roof, needs to by built into one of the walls of the RV. Then you need to move the air around, for that you'll need electricity. The blowers in a RV or window mount A/C use almost as much power as the compressor.

I've had colleagues who used absorption refrigeration at home, because they had "free" head gas from an oil well on their property. The absorption unit outside was about 16 times the volume of my compressor/condenser package for a similar size house, and still needed the air handler inside. But then, when I upgraded to a high-efficiency compressor/condenser, the size of the box tripled, mostly empty space to enclose much larger condenser coils.
  • it would be a big AC to output 13,500 BTU. Average Refer @ 2400 BTU
it would have a 15' generator stack.
  • 1. It would probably burn a LOT of propane.
    2. It would require a lot of AC or DC power to run the fan.

If you get a real hefty inverter, you can run your A/C off of your batteries for a short time.

You could, if you had an onboard generator adapted to run on propane.
  • As long as it's flat and not tall; I don't think it would be a problem?
