Propane water heater

Hi I can get my pilot light on my water heater lit, but when I let the knob go up so I can move it to the on position the pilot light goes out.I have replaced the thermocopler didn't change anything. I tried to light my fridge same problem. Any idea's what could cause this. It's a 2009 Rockwood tent trailer Suburban Sw6P 6gal water heater
Thanks.

  • Make sure the tip of the thermocouple is well positioned in the pilot flame and heats up.

Can you get us a pic of the pilot light when lit?

I ALWAYS have to light the pilot then continue holding the knob in for 15-20 seconds before releasing it. This is because the thermocouple must heat up enough to cause it to keep the pilot on. If the thermocouple has not heated enough then the pilot will go out as soon as you release the knob. This prevents gas leaking if the pilot goes out.

Yeah, that's the first thing I thought of...releasing the knob too soon. But if you have had it working in the past then there is another problem. If it's a new to you trailer then you could experience both problems - air in the lines as well as releasing the knob too soon. I had to bleed the propane lines in my refrigerator before it would stay lit consistently after I ran the stove.

  • The pilot flame should sound like a small blow torch on this model- you should be able to hear it. If it is lazy, it won't heat the thermocouple enough.
You also need to make sure you do not over tighten the thermocouple, as the end is an electrical connector with an insulating layer, which can be crushed, shorting it out.
If the pilot lights, you have propane to the unit.
  • Old-Biscuit is on the money, again.... Follow his directions and you should solve the problem. If not, let us know what you have done to date and we will suggest next best step. Good luck.

  • You do have propane in cylinder and valved in.....correct?

Turn ON stove top burners and let them run for a few minutes......could be air in lines (problem with lighting water heater AND fridge)

When burners are burning well.....try to light WH and fridge. May take a few attempts until propane flow has reached the WH & fridge
