Pros and Cons of Trailer Towing your Toad

I have two Jeeps a new Wrangler and a Grand Cherokee that I flat tow, but I just bought another ride i would love to take along too. I just got a Mustang GT Convertible auto trans that can't be flat towed or I don't want to make it flat towable. It would seem to me in my thoughts that trailer towing it would be a real hassle. I would also like to know about enclosed trailer hauling and how hard it is to get in and out of the car inside the trailer and moving about it to tie it down.
I have a motorcycle I like to take with me also and having it all enclosed would be nice while traveling.
If I had an open trailer with a rock shield in the front how much road spray gets on he vehicles?

  • I towed a Pontiac Soltice. No damage was ever done to the car. I made sure the trailer fenders were low enough to open the doors over them. It was an open trailer. If you get an enclosed one be sure you get a front door to get at the tie downs. I used e-track in the floor to tie down with.
  • I have towed many cars some of each method. Tow-bar with all four wheels on the ground has the problem of damaging the vehicle unless it's modified. A tow dolly for a rear-wheel drive is not really much better, but for a front wheel drive it's a fair choice.

    But my favorite is a full trailer. It tows better, tracks better, sways less, no modifications necessary, brakes are easy, and backing up is practical. I have never had a shield in the front so I don't know how much it helps - but the car on the trailer seems to be a bit cleaner than with a tow bar. Tie-down isn't a big deal if you figure out a technique. I always like to chain to the frame/body so the car suspension is squeezed so the car doesn't bounce as much. Once you have a position on the trailer, and chains or straps that always go in the same place, it should be a pretty quick load/unload.
  • We tow our Frontier (2WD) on a car hauler, and it works well for us. Tie downs on all 4 wheels, as I'm paranoid about it coming loose. We bought an aluminum 16 foot dual axle with brakes on both axles and with our Brakesmart (no longer made) controller, the rig tows/stops beautifully.
  • The biggest problem we had towing a trailer is the people running a park. There were several parks that made us unhook and leave the trailer in a separate section when the space was large enough to fit. A pain when you are not staying long. I have only had two times I had to unhook the car because I took the wrong road. It is more work to load and tie down when I am hauling my jeep, then it is to hook up our car. I like to use the trailer with the jeep, because if it has a problem it can be loaded and fixed when we are home.
