You can put a vented cover over them as other spoke of. But the cheaper ones will still get brittle in time from the temps changes. The absolute best thing is to install Fantastic Fan units! They are guaranteeded and will last! In our 2002 we had one Fantastic Fan but ended up with 2 cheapos...we had a bad hail storm a few years ago...the hail smashed the cheap ones to tiny pieces but the Fantastic Fan unit didn't even get a dent, crack or scratch. After 12 years...it's still great. The other two --replaced with FF units! You can still put the Maxx air covers over the FF also as other have said, so rain won't come in when it's open.
