This is a fun idea but it can be a "borrow from Peter to pay Paul" scenario in some cases. One of the best ways to budget for camping or any lifestyle is a zero based budget like that Dave Ramsey prescribes (easily found on his web site).

That being said, there are cases where avoided costs can be considered saved. A plumbing leak that I found, had a quick patch made, then did the drywall myself - I probably saved $500 (this is CA the land of the ripoff).
