The first question I would have would be, Do you have a capture plate installed on the trailer?
If yes, go on pull-rite site and download the manual for your hitch. IMPORTANT: Read the manual.
I know in my manual it does not tell me to lift the trailer off the plate as others here are telling you. The reason for this is the "pin" on the trailer is shaped like an upside down T. _l_ The jaws (or a better term for this hitch "the hook" goes around the narrow part. If you lift the trailer off the plate you can pinch the hook between the bottom part of the inverted T and the bottom of the plate.
The manual will tell you to chock the trailer before unhooking. And it may be necessary to back up to relieve the pressure of the pin against the hook. Just a slight back pressure and then set the parking brake before going back to park should do it.
If those items do not fix it then there is a good chance the previous owner did something to the hitch and you should have it checked out.
