I've found the exact model with options we want in a new toyhualer but unfortunately it's in Kentucky, approx. 7 hours away. My concern is the dealer has already shown some pretty high pressure tactics on the phone, like telling him to call him as late as 10pm on his personal cell to give a deposit. I'm worried the deal could get altered when I get there. It's at a Camping World. Ive considered offering to finalize the paper work at a local store and simply going there to get it. Any advise?

i wouldn't buy a RV from my local CW, let alone one out of state.

First of all, contact your local DMV to find out what the sales tax rate is, what the title, registration and any other fees related to the purchase would be based on registering it in your home state. Also get the mailing address where they would have to send the check and all supporting documentation.Give CW this information so they can work the #'s based on the vehicle being registered in NC.Second, insist they provide you with a signed buyer's order by a manager before you leave home. This will give you the final sales price with all the appropriate TT&L included. It will also show if they're trying to slide any "dealer added" fees into the deal. If they won't do it, walk away.Third, have them stipulate on the B.O. that the deal is subject to your final approval based on the walk thru of the unit and any and all issues MUST be resolved prior to you signing on the dotted line.It's not rocket science and the dealer can make it easy or hard depending on their integrity. I was in car sales in a previous lifetime and I had people come from several states away to buy from me. If it was used, then I would send them multiple pics of the car including every dent, scratch or imperfection and I wouldn't hide ANYTHING from them. I would even pick them up at the airport if necessary. My belief was that if they were willing to invest $$ to buy a car from me sight unseen and sometimes to travel several hundred miles to get there, then I would be go above and beyond to not disappoint. I never had a single customer complain that I didn't tell them everything. I don't know how much of these ethics still exist nowdays.

High pressure tactics on the phone, calling on his personal phone to give a deposit up to 10 at night?. They REALLY want to sell you something.All red flags to me. I refuse to deal with high pressure sale tactics. Go with your feelings.I would keep looking and stay away from that deaership.That's my advice.

Decided to go ahead and order it here local this morning. The out of state thing never felt right, much less it being at a CW.
Not real sure what I was thinking really...:S

Bottom line: a local dealer relationship is important, more than ever, to ensure timely warranty repair on an expensive, limited use opportunity, complex purchase. That's been my point the whole time.

Suggesting otherwise, and getting caught up in semantics, I believe is unreasonable.

Some are delusional. I don't think they understand that there are many more CW dealerships. CW is the only national chain of RV dealerships. They sell more RV's than anyone. Because of their buying power, they are very competitive.
Each CW dealership needs to be taken on their own merit.
I would not make a blanket statement to never buy from CW. I would do my homework on the rig including price comparisons. I would negotiate in good faith and evaluate the CW dealership I'm buying from, just as I would a non CW dealership. I would also do a very thorough PDI before pulling off the lot.
Warranty work is a **** shoot at all dealerships. CW and non CW dealerships are both subject to the slow, cumbersome approval process set up by the RV manufacturers.
I have purchased 2 new RV's one out of state and one special ordered locally.
Neither one ever required warranty service.
Explore the deal at CW. If the vibe is bad and the sales pressure to high walk away. But if its the unit you want cut to the chase and make them any offer with your final out the door price. Your in control of the deal not the salesman. If they accept make sure the deal includes passing a stringent PDI.
If they do not accept your offer, take bids from your local dealers. Let them no you are a serious customer ready to place an order and get their best price.
Remain in control of the situation. If the aggressive salesman wants to harass you for a deposit. Call his bluff and make him meet your price.
If he can meet all your criteria, seal the deal if he can't let him know why and move on.

No offense, but you're doing the OP a disservice suggesting your personal experience represents the common experience of new RV purchasers these days. Even my own dealer will highly recommend doing an immediate shake down use after purchase to identify issues, because, as he says, most likely there will be issues.

Suggesting that there will not be issues because you got lucky undermines the risk the OP would be taking by ignoring a strong local dealer relationship.

My opinion...

If you are reasonably sure you want this model and options, and it is within a day's drive, even to the point you are entertaining a deposit...take a drive to check it out.

By the time you weigh the pros and cons of deposit/buying, you can be there and know for certain. You won't miss an opportunity and you won't be obligated until you are sure.

That is likely how we would handle it, but do what you feel is the best way :C

Listen to the advice you are getting here. The unit will be shabby built, the Dealer is a crook, no one will work on it after the purchase, and the value will depreciate to 1/2 the purchase price when it leaves the lot. Keep your money in your pocket and find another hobby to spend your time on.

Considering how shoddy builds are today, I would agree that chances are there will be issues arise of the warranty kind.

Just the way the industry is today. Shove it out the door and let a dealer fix the issue.

I would never give a deposit over the phone unless I already had a long term relationship with that dealer..The deal quoted over the phone will change after you drive 7 hours and they have you under their roof. I recommend the comments already posted concerning warranty and sales reliability..CW does not meet my expectations..
