they (US builders) couldn't build a car like the Japanese could
You got to be kidding! Back in the '70's somebody that bought a Plymouth Valiant or Duster could get the slant six. That engine will run for almost forever, need little mantenance, and got reasonable gas mileage. Or, they could by a Toyota Corolla or whatever they were, pay fairly expensive 30,000 miles services at the local Toyota dealer, replace or repair the frames that hold the McPherson struts because they were poorly supported in the frame, and the engine started burning oil at around 100,000 miles. Yea, the car got slightly better gas mileage but that was about all. They were not better built, better quality or longer lasting. The advertising hype tried to tell us they were but that was all it was-- hype. Fast forward to today, Toyota has the largest number of lawsuits of any car manufacturer, floor mat recalls, and recalls on top of previous recalls for the same thing. The early models of the T100 with the V8 engine (forrunner of the Tundra) had an almost 100 percent replacement of the engine within the first few thousand miles. And now there is concern that the radiation from the hybrids, principally Prius models, could have long lasting negative health issues for occupants. The country of Israel won't let their law enforcement folks drive or ride in a Prius for work due to lasting affects of radiation.
How do supposedly smart people like you even begin to think their quality is better than ours? And since this is an RV forum and about towing Toyota makes nothing that even begins to compare to any of the big three made in America. Nissan will begin to close that gap with the Cummins later this year. But, even then, it will not come close to what a Ram, Ford or GM can tow, effortlessly, and for hundreds of thousands of miles before the engine needs replacing. Some early Cummmins in the early Ram pickups are now passing the million mile mark and never been taken apart. Where is the Japanese equivalent?
As I re-read your quote maybe you meant that the American car manufacturers could
not build as crappy a car as the Japanese could. If that was your intent then we are on the same page.
