You got to be kidding! Back in the '70's somebody that bought a Plymouth Valiant or Duster could get the slant six. That engine will run for almost forever, need little mantenance, and got reasonable gas mileage.
As I re-read your quote maybe you meant that the American car manufacturers could not build as crappy a car as the Japanese could. If that was your intent then we are on the same page.
The slant six was a great engine, but IMHO Detroit couldn't build an automobile that would last more than six or seven years before rusting out - OR - be able to get more than 100k miles on it.
I believe the Japanese exporting automobiles to the US back than inspired American manufactures to "step up their game". I further believe that since that period our (almost 100%) built in America automobiles have vastly improved their game.
I own and drive a (made in Mexico) 2015 RAM 3500 and love it! You're right about one thing though, where is Toyota with a one ton diesel pick up?
Most cars on the road today are much safer and more comfortable to drive then forty years ago.
There's a fine line between marketability and profitability. I guess it will always be "buyer beware" regardless if we're talking about autos or RVs or electronics.
