Yes you need a deep socket. You'll probably have to dig into an impact set to find one deep enough in that size.
BTW - that was one of the features that persuaded me towards that hitch. The deeply recessed gal shank means it won't bind up with the WD bars during sharp turns. That was the one real problem I had with my Reese Dual Cam (and when the outer bar bound up, the inner bar simply dropped out.... this can't happen with the Blue Ox).
