Question for the planners?

I often read where Joe Camper has a reservation for nite#1 at camp A,
reservation for nite #2 at camp B and so on.
How often does this work out? If you have a serious traffic delay or a breakdown, do you push on no matter the hour? If the Missus sees an attraction that she just needs to see do you stop or pass on her happiness just to meet schedule?
Once your itinerary is broken do you wing it at that point or regroup with another schedule?
I realize that if you are still working that you probably have a more rigid schedule than those of us that are retired.

  • We never make reservations except for our final destination. On recurring trips we do like to patronize particular camps enroute, but if things don't work out no big deal.
We almost lost a friendship, due to a buddy insisting that we make time and stick to a strict no option itinerary. We are still friends with the couple, but we do not travel together anymore!
  • Not only do we not make reservations but often we don't know the exact route we are taking only where we'll end up. Sometimes we don't even end up where we though we would.
  • I don't tend to spend only one night in a locale. If a location is popular enough to warrant advance reservations it should be able to hold our interest for at least 2 or more nights. Should something happen to stop us from arriving as "scheduled" go ahead and change it knowing you've still a place to lay your head whenever you arrive.

Still tenting but since we use a car to do get around seems about the same as RVing on that level. I also do a lot of reading in advance on itinerary stops so I know some of the things I want to do before we go. Conversely, when time is constrained makes it easier to decide what sights to save for a later trip.
  • We don't reserve for every night. Just the critical ones. And allow flex time in between.
