Question from a friend -- engine immobilization
A friend of mine is going to be gone for a year or so out of state. He has a class "C" motorhome, on the usual E-450 chassis. It is winterized, the Onan generator fogged, all goodies out, but he is in an area where larger vehicles (pickup trucks mainly) get "borrowed".
His class "C" doesn't seem to have a PATS system, so I was looking at ways to help protect against vehicle theft. Some things I've looked at:
1: There are immoblizers which are based on "chop up wiring, put it in a harness, make a key" concern me because newer rigs will have very major problems if someone messes around with the CANbus without proper knowledge.
2: The Club is the first line of defense, just to show the rig is secured. It can be picked or the steering wheel cut, but it is an obstacle.
3: Kill switches seem to be a good option, but on a newer vehicle, I am concerned about proper wires to cut (last thing I want to do is cut CAN wires.) I was thinking a hidden switch for the fuel pump.
4: Pulling the batteries and completely draining the fuel tank are also options.
Any good recommendations? I was thinking basic, fool-resistant stuff like the Club on the steering wheel and pulling the batteries. It won't stop a professional thief, but it would force a would-be joyrider to provide their own battery.
