Question? Fueling with Refrigerator or Furnace Running

Just read through some other recent posts, and got me to wondering? Members of RV.net are really divided on keeping the refrigerator running on gas with fueling up. Same goes for the gas furnace.

OK, so many say it's not good because of a possible fire at the pumps, and as one other poster stated, "swoosh!" (thar she goes).

So, my question is, has anyone actually EVER seen this happen at fuel stations? Has anyone ever actually knowns someone ... YOU KNOW ... not word of mouth .... this has happened to? I'll even accept a news article declaring a fuel station fire was caused by someone running their refrigerator at a fuel station or because of their furnace.

or ... is the just folk legend?

Now matter how you ask this question, it will become an argument very shortly. One that we see often.
  • My Winebago manual says shut off the gas appliances before fueling. Why take the unnecessary and possibly catastrophic risk by not shutting these appliances before fueling.
