Questions for those with residential refrigerators

We now have a new residential refrigerator... When in transit, do we need to do anything to protect the glass shelves as we bounce down the road? Do you still use a refrigerator fan to circulate the air? Thanks!

  • We use the rubber shelf liner that we get in Walmart. We don't use it to protect the glass shelves, although it does perform that function. We use it to keep stuff from migrating all over the inside the fridge. If I put the mayonnaise at one spot, I expect to find it in the same location the next time I open the door. We also use small plastic drawer organizers to keep like things together.
  • Ours has never bounced, even when we've traveled with the shelves empty. I actually had never thought about it, but now I'm a little nervous.
  • Dfletch, there is driving as in highway to private RV resort and there's driving as in boondocking on bumpy USFS/BLM dirt/rock roads.
  • We just load our glass shelves up with plenty of beer, water, and other heavy items to make sure the shelves don't bounce around too much. :) Seriously, we do have a lot of stuff on the glass, and haven't had any issues at all with the glass shelves. But, I did have to replace one of the plastic veggie bins once because the lip on it cracked.

Did you ever find it necessary to use a refrigerator fan in a residential refrigerator in any house you have ever lived in??
Probably not. You won't need one in the RV either.

Many (probably most these days) residential fridges already have fans inside to circulate the air when they are cooling, in fact. I highly doubt an additional one would make much difference.

  • Glass bottles (wine, olives, gravy, mayo, soda etc.) repeatedly banging into glass shelves would concern me but I tend to boondock and bounce too.
  • I we do is lock the doors closed and roll down the road.. I assume the items in the fridge will hold the shelving in place..

We do not use a fridge fan
