To answer a few questions: I'm referring mostly to Santa Cruz (Seacliff, New Brighton). We've been lucky a few times and got reservations at Half Moon Bay. It took 6 months of trying and finally got a spot at Wrights Beach near Bodega Bay. It's frustrating to be ready with 3 computers at start time and still not get a spot. Bottom line is there are more people going camping than there are facilities, especially during spring and summer. It's the same problem in the Sierra mountain state parks. I guess we should start looking into privately owned parks instead of the state parks.
Seacliff and New brighton fill up super fast. It's difficult to get sites at them. Have you tried Sunset? It's just south, and I personally like it better as it's quieter down there.
There's also a KOA in La Selva that I've heard is nice. Not sure how difficult it is to get a site there, except I know Halloween is crazy.
