We had a '87 Raider with the manual trans. When you put the transfer case in neutral, it locked the front and rear drive shafts together just like when in awd. It would not damage the transmission or transfer case, but you would be turning both differentials and drive shafts. It would hurt tv mileage, and increase wear and tear on your tires. The way I discovered this was trying to tow with a tow dolly. The Raider would try to drive off the dolly because the front wheels were engaged. Oddly enough you can tow them on a dolly backwards, with the trans in park, steering wheel locked, transfer case in 2wd.
