Sorry, but that doesn't sit well with me. Unless I could 100% legitimately claim it, I will eat the loss and know I did the right thing.
I could call the home insurance people, but I would tell them it was not at the home, it was not insured, it was in a paid storage facility miles from home etc. But I still wouldn't feel right about it, so I'm not going to try.
Wow guys, I never stated not to be straight forward with them. I believe in being super transparent and it's always worked well for me (and it's the adult thing to do). As I stated, get it out of the storage lot that you are paying for. Call your rep and see what they can do and if your home owners covers it. Good luck...that's the end of me taking my time to try and help a guy out with some ideas.
