I absolutely hate to pay $30 to stop for 9 hours in a CG. When available I stop at Cracker Barrell or Wallmart. I am self-contained and want for no hookups in these stop for sleep events.
I'm with you. We'll travel during the daylight and then overnight in a lot somewhere, then go to a destination and do more traveling in the daylight and then overnight in a lot again. We'll stop at a favorite campground along the way to dump and relax for a few days, but after three months of snowbirding, we want to be home and don't want to hang out at campgrounds the whole trip north.
Also, we just joined Harvest Hosts, so we'll stop at about 3 or 4 of those as well. I hear it's a really nice option for those who dry camp during their travels.
