One trick I do is about 20 minutes before I shower, I run the hot water until it comes out warm on the shower head, redirecting the water into a bucket that I can toss outside (might as well use the clean water for something other than occupying my waste tanks.) That way, all the pipes are warm and gives a little bit more shower time.
Of course, switching the water off when soaping up is a given, as doing this is the difference between a decent shower versus the water running cold.
