Turn up the temperature control on your 6 gallon water heater. This means less hot water will be needed for mixing with cold water to give you the shower temperature you want.
This little trick will, for all practical purposes, extend your water heater's 6 gallons just as if you had a larger capacity water heater. The only caveat is that both adults and children will need to be more careful when using hot water at the sink(s) because "just cranking on the hot water without caution" at a faucet could burn the skin a bit.
