Tax laws vary from state to state. In Vermont, this is not true, as I understand it; you may apply the selling price from a previous vehicle to the new one when transferring the registration and only pay the sales/use tax on the difference, regardless of whether the sale of the previous one was to a private party or a trade in with the dealer. Check with your state's DMV or whatever they call it for the actual correct details. (Of course, if you buy the new one before selling the old one, you can't apply the money from the future sale towards the tax on the new one....)
