Receiver-mounted bike rack

I know next to nothing about bike racks. I am interested in getting one that mounts in a receiver, for two bikes. Don't ask what kind of bikes, cause we don't have them yet. :) But they will be fairly generic bikes, not expensive ones.

I want the carrier to hold the bikes securely, and I'll need some way to lock the bikes into it. I'm not looking for the cheapest way out. I want something that works decently.

What to look at, and what to avoid?

as far as i've seen, Swagman is the only company that makes a receiver bike rack for RV's. most other manufacturers will not warranty theirs for this purpose.

X2 on the Swagman. Might be cheaper here with the freight. There is also a pin lock shown on that page.

We've carried the two bikes over 5k miles on the back of the fiver with that rack with no issues.

    We use an Adco cover.
  • X2 on the wheel mount. Even with that style we tie the bikes down to the troughs the wheels rest in due to the bouncing on the bad roads. More info if you search this Forum for `bike rack'. You can narrow the responses if you search the results for a particular rack eg. Saris Cycleon which we use in a receiver in the front of our tow vehicle.
  • I highly recommend the wheel mount type as there is a lot of bouncing around on the hanging type hitch. I had mine on the back of the fiver, and the wife said what is that tingling noise? I looked in the rear camera monitor and didnt see them. Any idea how much damge occurs hen you drag them down the road?? Went with the wheel mount and much more stable.
  • We use the Yakima High Light 3. It's lockable in the receiver, and the bikes can be locked to the rack.
  • Clicking on this link will take you to a website that will give you (or confuse you) a bunch of things to consider when you pick a carrier.

For the record, I have a Hollywood Roadrunner four bike carrier. It has served me well. However there a thousand of them out there to pick from. Stop by your local bike shap and take a look at what they have.
  • We have one similar to this. We use the bike lock cable that goes with us on the bikes as a second way of securing the bikes on MH.
