reese dual cam noise

I have a reese dual cam set up on a new 29ft Winnebago tt.i was told
when new they can be noisy. when I went to fl. this year the cracking wasn't bad, rain on the way down, and rain and snow and sleet on the way back in march.
just returned from nc ,hitch was cracking and groaning on the sharp turns in the campgrounds where we stayed.
I tried putting a small amount of Vaseline on the cams, it seemed to help but after 2oo to 300 miles it becomes very loud again when making those tight turns.my setup uses the bent hanger brackets.
I guess what I am asking, is this noise normal for this type of hitch?

What are you using to lube the REST of the hitch? Heavy grease works best on spring bar connections and hitch ball.Vaseline is fine for the cams themselves but not good enough for the rest of the hitch. Once mine is properly lubed it's pretty quiet.

Yup, me too. I even hit the chain links with a shot of penetrating lube. Dry chain that wiggles slightly under tension can creek and pop. Grease the ball and socket pivots and a pea-sized dab of Vasoline on the cam and bar seats, and don't forget to spread the dab onto the cam shoulder too. Otherwise, make sure you're not having binding issues in tight turns.

Mine barely makes any noise at all.
  • thanks for the feedback , I mentioned the wet weather because the noise disappeared .I will try using a heavier lube and keeping the spring bars on the same side. thanks again!
  • Are you using the spring bars on the same side or do you swap then out?

You may be and that is great, but I recommend everyone with DC to Be deliberate and use the same bar on the same side of the trailer. This will allow the cam and the bar to wear in together. If you swap them from side to side you will start the wear in process all over again.

    Thanks!

Same here. I keep all the wear points lubed and rarely ever hear anything.
  • Yes normal for the popping and grinding! Make sure you have grease on the ball and where the WD bars pivot in the hitch!

    It will leasen over time!

  • Yeah, it is normal. It's just the way these things are. You can try vaseline but you need the friction of bare steel on steel as part of the anti-sway function. There are some other noisier brands tho. If you haven't read anything in this forum, there are some good threads on setting up these hitches. Reese has a few intricacies that are good to be aware of.

Bugs me when pulling into a CG site and folks stare at us as if the TT's frame just broke in half or something. I do the same but it's okay because I'm glancing at their WDH to see what brand it is. ;) Funny, have only seen one other Reese DC WDH at our regular CG of about 250 sites.

Love our Reese WDH and wouldn't do without it.
  • When I had mine installed, I pulled my trailer out of the service bay and turned hard right. I hear all of this noise and wonder what I have just torn up. The service tech sees me and walks over laughing. He told me to get used to those noises -- it's how it's always going to be.

  • Yes, I have had mine for ten yrs now and always noisey on turns. i too tried the vaseline on the cams but it didn't seem to control the sway as well so I leave them dry.
