reflective insulation

I have heard that putting the silver reflective insulation on dual pain windows can actually harm the windows. Yes it does help keep the sunlight and heat out of the RV. However rumor has it that it reflects the heat back to the gap between the panes and can cause the seals to fail which could lead to fogged windows. Any truth to this?

  • Lots of folks I know use it but it's in the winter so there's no issue.

To keep cool in summer you really want to cover the window from the outside.

No issue with single pane windows.

There is no airspace between for the heat to build up. It can dissipate on both sides.

  • Outside is OK, inside is not.

But it is crucial to leave an airspace between the barrier and the glass. Heat must have room to escape.
  • Thanks for the information. Guess I'll move on to plan B. First I need to figure out a plan B.
  • I've seen where people have duct taped the heat barrier on the outside of the windows. Perhaps that would avoid the heat buildup in the window that causes the problem???
  • Here is some glass I have a contract to replace. They put some reflective barrier up against it in their stick & bricks kitchen. 5 glass units altogether - every one of them has failed badly. They are all fogged up and dirty inside.

2500 bucks for me to fix it.

A bit hard to see the failed glass itself but you can see how the barrier they put on went all to pieces from the heat buildup.

  • I work with glass in my business so I have encountered this a lot.

In the heat of the summer, yes, you can do damage to a sealed glass unit by putting a heat reflective insulated barrier against it.

The heat buildup is astounding and can damage the seal for sure and cause premature failure of the unit.

I have repaired lots of glass skylights where this has happened.
