Refrigerator -110 /12 V only - Usage Experience

Looking at a 1998 RV with a small Norcold refrig/freezer without Propane. Only 2 house batteries / no generator. Concerned with no propane. Do you have experience with one? What was your experience with Boon docking for any length of time? How long could you keep your refrig cold without running down the batteries. Did/do you use a portable generator or solar panel (size) for charging?

  • You could replace the older fridge with either a 120V or a 12V compressor fridge. I went for the 120V model because of price. It uses more power than a 12V compressor fridge but not by much. I also have solar, batteries, and an inverter.
  • Thank you for the replies. Won't be able to get refrig model info for awhile.. will do that in order to research better.
  • I have a Nova Kool 12 volt/120 volt refrigerator in my Class B. It does a fantastic job and barely sips on battery. I can live in my van about 3 days before I have to either plug in or start generator. Of course, this is a much newer product than the one you are asking about and that older unit may not be that energy efficient.
  • Norcold made a bunch of AC/DC refrigerators and still make several models

    What model is that one?
WIth model number more specific info can be provided

HERE is some of current models for you to check out and get an idea about them
    Norcold AC/DC Fridges
  • some special model DC compressor fridge ?

or regular absorption mode RV fridge ?

the first will be easy on electrical use, but you are still going to need a generator or solar

the second will eat those batteries, like starved children
