Portable printer usually mean some type of ink cartridge. If you only use it a few times a year, you will throw it away pretty quickly because the ink nozzles dry up and get plugged. No choice but toss it.
I bought the cheapest HP toner based printer I could get. Tossed it in storage and it works the few times a year I need it on the road.
