Registering 1-ton Truck in KS

You can call the county you plan on registering the truck in for the amount. My vehicles are older and cheaper to register. You will have tag fees and personal property tax. Khp staffing fee, law enforcement training fee, DMV modernization fee, county service fee, primary facility fee. For my 06 Ford F-250 it is about $120.

The newer the vehicle the more the property tax. The maximum devaluation is achieved by 10 years old which my qualify for.

No emissions testing but out of state vehicles have to go through a vin inspection before you can register.

Thanks for the info, colliehauler. Sound pretty reasonable for a 250. Surprised it's not higher with as many fees as you quoted--lol!

In some states a truck with a GVWR >10k (1-ton) makes them commercial with a lot higher fees. Any idea if that's the case in KS?

Glad to hear there's no emissions testing though. That's one less thing to worry about :)

Yes anything larger then a 1 ton and the fees are extremely high. At onetime I thought of a med duty truck to haul a large 5th wheel but the fees were commercial rate.

I thought of getting a large cab with sleeper med duty truck so I could have a restroom and kitchen so I could register it as a RV and the tag dept said that would not work. I think South Dakota would be the place to register a large med duty truck.

Every State is different. In MN my 2500 Ram was based on the sale price/value. License was just under $500.00 the first year. Moved up to a Chev 3500 and the p;ates are based in the weight and cost under $200.00. Check with your DMV.

You mentioned fees are "extremely high" for "anything larger than a 1-ton". I assume you're saying fees go up a lot with a GVWR higher than 14k (Class 4; 14k-16k GVWR), right? Our 1-ton 3500 has a 11.7k GVWR (Class 3; 10k-14k GVWR).

We paid $700 for tags when we purchased our truck new. It's now dropped to $400 annually. We're hoping KS is the same or lower. Have plans to call the KS DMV first thing Mon morning. Thanks again!

I'm not sure where the gwwr breaking point is, my tag is 12k gvwr. On late model they ding you on personal property tax the other fees aren't bad.

Just went out and varified all my 3/4 tons are tagged 12m regular.

Tried calling the KS DMV. Unfortunately, they will not provide this info over the phone. Plus, no info (that I could find) at their website.

KS DMV website has a property tax calculator.
Gets you the tax required annually.
I plugged in a 2018 3500HD and got ~$700 tax and 2014 3500HD and got ~$400 tax.

Our 2012 F350 SRW was $229, personal property tax. Tagged for 20M lb and if I remember right the license fee was around $150. Next level for tagging was 24M and around another $100. more. We insure for RV use only and it costs less than 2010 Ford Ranger 4 Cyl. daily driver.
