Registering Trailer in a State Other Than Actual Residency

Hi, all. I'm asking this question for a friend who owns a 20' travel trailer registered in Arizona. It is a 2009 model he purchased new, no slide-outs, double axle. He is concerned about what he considers unreasonably high license and registration rates (sounds high to me, too). He is paying $750/year and the amount isn't going down year-to-year.

His question is: Can he register his trailer in another state while keeping his Arizona residency? He thinks he may be able to get a mailing address in another state by opening a PO box there, but I feel that won't work without actually changing his residency. What say you? Thanks in advance....

Well, you folks confirmed my suspicions. I'll let my friend know....

You might also tell him to check out the Arizona State webpage that describes the rules and penalties for anyone failing to abide by them at this link.

Arizona's so aggressive about residents' out-of-state registrations that there's even a stand-alone online page where people can anonymously turn in offenders! Link to "Report a violator"

  • Save time and don't even try it. I do not know of any state that would allow it.

    Nope!
    Been thru this one myself...
  • Not only is it illegal but probably wont work since the new state will require him to show proof of address (just giving a PO Box as the address probably wont work). If Arizona finds out he did this he will be liable for fines and maybe jail time if they go after him.
