Always put a wrench on both ends of a shackle bolt, the fact that it turned says that the knurling was stripped out with your impact wrench. Lose the impact wrench and use plain wrenches when removing AND installing.
Add a piece of pipe as a cheater !
I try to work smarted not harder, a good normal length six point box wrench on the bolt head, impact on the nut, short burst, it will come loose.
I learned a lesson about impact wrenches when I was about 18, I was replacing the alternator in my 68 Mustang I could not get the pulley nut off. Strap wrench on fan blades, and big wrench, no go!
Took to my friendly Ford dealer, I was good friends with parts person. Took out to shop, put a shop rag on the fan blades, held it with his hand, and hit the nut with the impact wrench, the nut came right off, and the fan didn't move.
Since he apparently destroyed the knurling in the shackles with the impact wrench, my thought is that using power tools is not the smarter thing to do. A little hard work builds character.
