Removing the antenna

I'm looking for advice on removing the Wingard antenna from our 1995 Coachmen 5er. It doesn't extend all the way up and we don't use it if it did. How much of a hassle will it be to remove it altogether?
  • FYI, I just ordered the center shaft.. as the seal has failed... water dripping off the handle...

keep or remove the antenna.. you still have to address the crankshaft and seal.
  • It seems to me that if there is a hole in the roof near the front of the base and the elevator rod goes through that hole all the way up past the mast arms to that black hex cap which acts as a centering bearing. Looking at the manual and remembering what it looks like inside as I replaced the masts that hit a tree, your going to need the rod and everything but the masts and the bat wing. So all you should remove are two clevis pins and then pull out the masts and the elevating gear in the end of one of the masts.

A lot of work for no real benefit. I'd just leave the antenna down and not worry removing anything.

Just put a weather cap on the male "F" connector,if you are going to remove the antenna.

I believe this is my best option. I will only have to plug the hole the wire goes in (the rubber boot is loose anyway).

    Thanks for the replys guys!
  • Just leave it up and look for trees...

Seriously, removal shouldn't be difficult, but remaining patchwork is certainly more work than just leaving it. Besides, removing and patching will make future antenna repair and/or installation much more difficult for you or the next guy.

One of Murphy's laws is this:
The week after you remove it... You will wish you had repaired it instead.

Removal is really very easy depending on how much you wish to remove.

  • That's exactly what I did. I removed the antenna completely and it leaves about a 1 inch tube hole in the roof. I taped the inside and filled the gap with spray foam, then covered the hole with eternabond. No problems and no maintenance.
  • If you remove it cover the area with Eternabond tape for a water tight seal. :)
  • If it does not work why not just leave it. If you take it out you will have a 1 3/4 inch hole in the roof you have to patch plus all the other holes in the roof from the mounting screws and coax cable.

I know that I don't want to worry about any extra holes in my roof that I have and make sure they don't leak.
