I used to spend a lot more nights boondocking than I do right now. I had favorite off-road spots to sleep. A couple were probably on private property, but in spots worn flat by trucks. I was never hassled by owners, it was dark and private. This last trip I slept in 3 "rest areas." 2 of them were slightly noisy with idling trucks, but the other was dark and quiet. It just happened that that one had more RVs than semis. That was the only place I had a problem with a jerk! Now to be fair to the jerk, I'm pretty certain he just pulled off there because he knew he was drunk and needed a place to rest, but then he decided that hassling another RVer (not me - I love my big dog) and throwing up near her rig were a good idea!
On this trip I also boondocked in a quiet parking lot and off the road at an exit. Quiet and no problems either place.
I don't carry a gun when traveling (too many state lines!) but I sleep with the truck's panic button at hand. Hope that helps.
