Hi,what is the best place to find road construction for an upcoming trip. Will be traveling West on I90 from Rotchester Mn to Murdo South Dakota then to Elk Mountain Wyoming. Thanks!

  • I like Google Maps. With Traffic turned on, I will check my route a few times a day for several days to find out when the best time to travel is.

  • I've been mapping the route on Google maps, shows where current issues are. Can't vouch for how accurate it is though.
  • The site has good information.

    For Wyoming H E R E - wyoroad.info
  • Sirus seems pretty good but may not cover the entire route from one spot.
Our Rand McNally has alerts, if it is updated and speed cameras.
Rand Mc Nally Internet link, we haven't tried it.
Just now considering it we probably can link up our Rand McNally GPS and Internet and not have to contend with the laptop in our laps, with MIFI.
Off hand the Sirus link seems the most easily accessed and possible accurat.
  • You need to google SD DOT road construction map. With the motorcycle rally getting started, there should be little construction on 90.

Have a safe trip, if traveling soon, will likely see a few motorcycles.

  • I haven't checked for those states, but I often use various state's DOT sites to find lists of construction projects or other road issues such as flooding.

One other thing I use quite a bit is google-maps with live traffic enabled on my smart-phone. This shows real-time traffic backups, (Since the road turns from green to red they can be seen at a glance.) including construction backups. By zooming out so I can see about 30 or 40 miles ahead, I have time to find a different route.

Not all construction projects make it to the DOT web sites and not all listed construction zones have backups all the time, so I find this even more useful than the state DOT web-sites. We use this even when going to town (30 mile trip) on our small rural roads to avoid the frequent but short lived one-lane-pilot-car backups around here.

Actually on long trips I use the allstays app which uses google-maps with live traffic as the base layer but I can also turn on campgrounds, fuel stations, low bridges, etc.
