Roadmaster Invisibrake?

Just bought new Toad- Ford Edge. Anyone using the Roadmaster Invisibrake?? Pros? Cons? Trying to decide which plug and play is best. Thanks for any feedback.
  • I have one on a Jeep GC, it works as advertised, no problems with it
  • That's a good thread to read, from the IRV Forum. I don't have, or put, a lot of faith in others problems that arise with the Invisibrake system. I believe the installation needs to be done correctly, with the proper equipment and by a very knowledgable technician. There are particular installations that can complicate the install and the techniques used to do that install can make a big difference in the operation and reliability of the braking system.

We had an Invisibrake system installed in our toad when we purchased the motorhome, more than 13,000 miles ago. No issues, whatsoever. I believe in the system and like the operation and ease of use.

What is your toad and what "extras" are required for towing, besides the barke system? Charge system needed? How are the toad lights going to be done, extra bulbs, different lights at rear of toad, diodes using existing lights? All thes can have an effect on the future reliability of the system, depending on the install.
The invisibrake system is a more "permanent" type of installation and not so easy to move or change vehicles. There are others that can be easily moved from one vehicle to another - then the simplicity of connecting and setting up the toad/motorhome for each tow can be more complex.

    We like our invisibrake system.
  • I have the Invisbrake in the CRV (see signature) with no issues.

However there is a lot of credible posts by YC1 and others concerning Invisbrake failure ie brake lock up. I have followed these posts and would not recommend the Invsibrake.

Highly recommend reviewing at least the recent posts in the above linked thread. Post 181 and later are revealing.
  • I use the Invisibrake on my CRV. I have only used it locally and for one longer trip to the US southwest from Canada. So far so good. I did install it myself.
  • We have a new Ford Edge and will have it installed professionally as I am mechanically inept. Will keep reading up on Invisibrake............ Thanks for the input so far.
  • Don't forget that you will need to have a battery disconnect installed in your Edge. When I had mine installed, I had it configured so that the disconnect was powered by the charge line from the MH. The battery is disconnected as soon as I plug in the umbilical cable from the MH. I was going to go with the Invisibrake, but the dealer doing the install was unfamiliar with the installation so I wet with the Brake Buddy instead. Is not a huge hassle but not as convenient as the Invisibrake. At least i can switch it over to a different car if I want.
  • I am now on my 2nd toad using an Invisibrake system. I have not had any problems in 43K miles, although I have not yet towed my second toad. I kept a couple of the component of my first toad and had them installed on my second toad. The cost of putting the Invisibrake on the 2nd toad was $2K. As far as disadvantages go, it is more costly if you switch toads frequently. With both my toads, the invisibrake system itself was placed under a front seat. I always worry about a rear seat passenger hit the dial with his/her foot and moving the settings. Other than that, it is a slick system, and better yet, their hdq is about 10 miles from my house.
