Roadside Assistance

I see alot of posts about the different roadside assistance plans but never very much about how much benefit they really provide versus just looking up a towing service or repair service on your phone and calling them yourself. Not to say the plans are not worth it but can someone tell me why they are better than just doing it yourself?
  • You'll quickly note the benefit of Roadside Assistance when you shred a tire in the middle of nowhere and all of the local small town businesses are closed up for the weekend. Been there on a couple of occasions and were mighty happy for Triple A's phone number - priceless!
  • I estimate the value of the towing and other services I've received from Coach-Net at no additional cost to me have not only paid all of my premiums to date, but likely 8-10 years into the future. Add to that the convenience of only needing one phone call to arrange for service, and there's no way I would travel without their membership card in my pocket. Our last tow alone would have cost me about $700 first to a local campground for the night, and then to the repair shop the next day. All arranged and paid for by Coach-Net except for the campsite fee...
  • If you want to spend your time searching for a company that is open on Friday evening that will have the right equipment to tow your Minnie Winnie, then do it yourself.
If you will get antsy waiting for 2 hours at the side of the road waiting for the company the RV assistance called, then do it yourself but the one you choose may not come any faster.

If you like the idea of making one call and then sitting back with a beverage of choice while waiting for someone to come take care of the problem then get a service.

As for me I chose the beverage route. Very happy I did.
  • You have the advantage of one business doing business with another as a known entity. As an individual the road service company does not know if they will get paid or not. They also maintain a good relationship year around with the road service company. It is business as business is done. You are an unknown entity.
  • I like making one call, explaining the problem to an RV tech who many times can determine what the likely problem is and then dispatching someone with the proper parts, equipment, tire, tow truck, what have you. This opposed to making how ever many calls are necessary to do that on your own. The roadside service will find someone to tow you on a Saturday night if need be becsuse the company thry call would like to do business with them agsin. Do you think you could find someone who would respond the same? If you did, do you think you would like paying the bill. I'll continue to pay for my emergency roadside service every year.
  • If they're up on technology, you can do it all within an app, and not have to spend 10 minutes trying to describe to someone where you are.
  • Basically the same as insurance. If you use it once or twice it will probably pay for your premiums for years to come rather than money out of your pocket today. If you never have to use it, then money lost.

Convenience. One call and they will take care of everything for you. And they already know tow services capable of handling RVs. And some, such as Coachnet, offer technical assistance over the phone.

But with smart phones and the ability to do internet searches even in the boonies (if you have decent signal strength) it is pretty easy to find services yourself.
