Roof maintenance material

In preparation to re-seal a couple areas on the trailer roof, I decided to review some You-tube videos just to make sure I was not forgetting anything important. It was/is my intention to use the Dicor, self-leveling product, which I have used a couple times in the past.

However, I happened to come across a couple videos from "RVBlue Zone" (one of which is called "RV Caulking - Sealing Things Up" - sorry don't know how to place a link), in which the host compares the Dicor product to a Home Depot/Lowes DIY level item and strongly endorses a commercial construction product called Sikaflex (both regular and self-leveling available).

He explains his reasons for using this product and, through the use of still images, describes the application process (actually uses a caulking gun and then a spatula type tool to taper it out). Much of what he says seems legitimate and he seems quite knowledgeable (about this and other stuff). He states the product is good for up to 15 years before needing any attention, comparing it to a 2-3 year life for Dicor and even suggests it can be used for underwater applications.

He repeatedly used the term "we have used" so appears to be familiar with this product in multiple applications, although he does not offer his services nor does he identify who "we" is.

I have never heard of this product before and am wondering if anyone is familiar with it and can offer comments, either negative or positive. Sure looks interesting, if what he says is true.

Sorry for the rather long post.

  • Thanks everyone for the replies.

2oldman - thanks for the links.

Bumpyroad - The guy in the video recommended Sikaflex 1a or Sikaflex Self Leveling Sealant. I checked the Sika site and they have a section for "Caravans and Motorhomes" in which they suggest Sikaflex 221. (although their descriptions for 1a and 221 seem similar)

Valhall360 - Perhaps cost has something to do with the manufacturers not switching over long ago. One would think they would use stainless steel screws too, rather than the ones they do use, which rust (10% of the screws in my previous trailer rusted and fell out. I replaced all screws with stainless steel). I would certainly not ignore routine inspections/maintenance regardless of which product I use. And Sika has a product to take off their sealants should any future owner require.

Funny thing, this morning I dropped into the local RV supply store to pick up some Dicor and other stuff and found a shelf full of Sikaflex products. Because I was in a hurry and all staff were busy, I did not have an opportunity to ask about these products so picked up the Dicor and left. Will have to drop back and ask specific Sikaflex questions in a day or two.

    Thanks again,

  • found a bunch of types but seems to lean towards concrete fixing.

  • First Sikaflex is a brand name. You have to define which product as they have a variety.

Second, if they could really get 15yrs reliably without any attention, manufacturers would have switched over long ago. As much as people like to go on about planned failures, they would jump on a cheap fix that was drastically better.

Assuming it is chemically compatible with your roof material (they aren't all the same), it may work OK but I wouldn't risk not keeping up on the maintenance as it could be a very expensive experiment.

Also, are you creating a problem for the next guy. Is the dicor compatible if the next owner puts that over the top.

Sikaflex is a urethane based sealant. It is also elastomeric. If the solvents in the product don't damage the membrane, it would be a good sealant.

a urethane based sealant is what was needed for my Ascend. gotta look for a source. OK, lots of choices. any idea as to the exact one to use on a RV, fiberglass roof to fiberglass side panels?
