RPM's when towing uphill?

The 3950 Peak torque number is the one you want to run when climbing. This is the peak efficiency of your motor. At that point it is breathing well and living longer. When under a load a motor needs to breath and the rpm helps that to happen. Keeping the motor down in rpms is a little like putting you hand over your mouth and nose and breathing.

Yes you are safe. The rev limiter won't let you over rev it. Around 6,000 RPM.

Ecoboost owners shouldn't gloat. That's not nice. And besides, Hemi owners likely won't believe it anyway.

The Available RPM is the figure that kinda makes me chuckle some....nobody ever talks about it though.

My dads 03 Cummins has a 3200 RPM redline
My old 99 V10 had a 5800 rpm redline IIRC

My Daddy consistently had to run his Cummins at around 2600-3000 RPM over some of the hills around here (Monteagle, Hwy 111 from Dunlap to Soddy Daisy. This is from 81-93% of the available RPM for the Cummins

My truck did these pulls at about 4500-5000 rpm... this is 77-86% of the available RPM for the motor .

Seems strange to me that people with diesels are content to run them at 81-93% of the available RPM all day long... since its numerically lower RPM (but as high or higher % wise) but a Gasser running 77-86% of the available RPM is disturbing to them.

The Ford 3.7 V6 with a 7,000 RPM shift point... that should be a FUN test to do a TT pull up a hill with. I wonder what RPM % it has to use. LOL

With my 03 2500 and the Hemi pulling my 6500 pound TT through Col and Utah I was hitting 4500-5000 RPM's. Hated it so I sold it to my son and got the diesel. he just sold it with 130K miles on it, no issues. he hemi is made to spin, if you don't like it, get a diesel. But, 4000rpm's will not ever hurt that truck.

There seems to be some sort of law against revving an engine over 2000RPM, because people get so upset when it happens.

Because most folks have never pushed their engine before... ;)

They are so used to cruising down the hwy in OD pulling less than 2000 rpms and going 70 mph..

Now, they have a huge TT behind them and hit a grade and think they need to keep up with traffic... So, they press the go pedal more and find that it goes over 2000 rpms and panic! :)

Just gotta know that's what the engine is really designed to do and no it won't get very good mpg's doing it either... :)

I do not understand your concern on reving an engine.These things are built to run . If you have issues the warning system will light up to let you know. Unless your engine oil,oil temp is lighting up do not worry.

I do not think this is a example but wanted to throw an exmaple. I have a motorcycle which redlined at 11000 rpm. It took me cross country , I used to do alot of track days it will live all day at the redline getting wound up , i did the cheapest oil i could get every 5000 miles. at 96000 miles i put a big bore kit and the engine or gear had no issues with the 1206 cc kit the bike will wheellie in first 3 gears!
