I've seen other forum software that may encourage a bit more helpfulness.
One is the "thanks" button. It is great for informative posts. It can be used on any helpful post that you run across. Some members accumulate large quantities of thanks votes-something which probably contributes to their forum status and respect.
The other is the post on some forums can be upvoted or downvoted. At times I've seen some get way below zero. A good way to let someone know their post is sour/unhelpful (if we must) without continuing a flame war. But in most cases the voting is positive or neutral in nature.
