Rusted receiver hitch

The past few yrs on my 07 Tacoma I have noticed a regressing situation with rust on my receiver, so today I removed it. Going to get a price to replace and a price to have it sandblasted & Painted. Hoping to get another 5+ years towing with it.

  • I replaced the receiver on my X because it was just starting to rust. If it looked like that I wouldn't even consider using it for a bike rack!

    Definitely get a new one.
  • That looks good compared to the one I took off my E150 ! It was over 15 years old, but each side had a hole completely rusted through !!

Didn't think of road salt right away. Course where I live snow is not an issue. Salt spray in the air is. Either way that the salt gets on thinly painted metal, if it is not washed off real quick rust is going to start.

That flaking rust says that the cancer has been set in for a long time & little, if anything was done about it.

There is still lots of life in that hardware. Get some rust converter. Follow the instructions. Coat that with a good primer or stuff like spray on bed liner & you will be good to go for many years.

Maybe it's good for you but I wouldn't tow anything with that hitch. Look at some of those close up pictures, that hitch is toast. There's too much at risk to take a chance using that hitch...do yourself, your family, and anyone else on the highway driving near you a favor and go buy a new one!

    salted roads in the winter?

The past 5 or so years our state has switch to a pre-chemical treatment of our state roads & highways. This has created even more problems with rusting then with the plain salt that was used in the past. :(
