Another place to stop in the Detroit area is the Henry Ford Museum to check out the camping display. Ol' Henry was a tent camper back in the day, along with friends Thomas Edison, and Warren G. Harding after his stay in Washington DC was over. Those ol' boys did it right. Henry sent a crew to the camp site a couple days early to set up the sleeping tents, the kitchen tent and the dining tent, and they were waited on hand and foot while "roughing it".
You can easily spend a day or two at the museum. Pretty much anything historic on wheels is there, including RR steam engines.
