I agree to crash in an SUV offers more protection over a motorhome. They are built so different. But don't forget what you will need behind you for RVing.
I believe you are more likely to be in a crash while pulling a TT or a 5er. So I vote that a MH is safer with or without a roll cage installed. The risk goes so much higher once you put that long sail behind you with a point of articulation between it and the driver. So, TT/truck or SUV is the least safe. I may give you a toss up with a dually/5th wheel combo versus a motorhome. Might.
You have to compare large TTs and 5ers to motorhomes. Even if you choose a 30-foot MH you have to go in the 25 feet or up range to have a TT/5th that's comparable in living space.
If you follow the news, you will see trailer wrecks more often than motorhomes. I don't know the exact statistics, but just following the forums leads me to believe trailer crashes are more prevalent. At least in the case of the wrecks that garner big-time news stories. You know the ones with lots of blood and guts.
I'll take a 35-foot or larger motorhome any day of the week and that's without a seatbelt in the back, too.
One of the least likely wrecks you will ever be in is the roll-over. That is the only situation that I would rather be in an SUV or van instead of a motorhome. I think that probability is slim to none.
Drive it safe. Keep it maintained and forget the roll cage instal. Who's to say you will do that right. You may cause a steel pipe to be driven through the back of your anatomy. (or someone else's) That would be bad irony of all irony.
